Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kerekere-Ekun

HON. JUSTICE KUDIRAT KEREKERE-EKUN obtained her Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B Hons) from the University of Lagos, Nigeria in June 1980. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.

She obtained a Masters Degree in Law (LLM) in November 1983 from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

From 1985 till 1989 she was in private practice as an Associate in a Private Law firm.

She began her career on the Bench as a Magistrate in 1989. She rose to the position of Chief Magistrate Grade II in 1993, a post she held until her appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State of Nigeria on 19th July 1996.

As a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State she was appointed Chairman of one of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunals, a position she held until the Tribunals were dissolved in 1999.

  • During her tenure as a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State she carried out various official assignments by serving on several committees. She served as Chairman, Public Complaints and Training Committee, a UNODC pilot project on strengthening judicial integrity and capacity in Lagos State.
  • Supervisory Judge in charge of Magistrates Courts in Lagos State.
  • Member of the committee that undertook the amendment of the High Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules in 2004, which introduced innovations in case management, such as front-loading procedure, pre-trial conference and the application of ADR mechanisms for the speedy dispensation of justice. The innovations have since been adopted in most states of the Federation.
  • Member, Steering Committee of the Lagos State Multi-Door Court House, the first court-connected Alternative Dispute Resolution centre in Africa.

She was elevated to the Court of Appeal of Nigeria in 2004. She served in various divisions of the Court of Appeal and as Presiding Justice of two Divisions of the court in 2011 and 2012. She was sworn in as the 5th female Justice of the Supreme court of Nigeria on Monday 8th July 2013. She is a member of the National Association of Women Judges, Nigeria and International Association of Women Judges.

She is a Life Bencher, a fellow of the International Dispute Resolution Institute and a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

She has attended various courses and seminars both within and outside Nigeria. She has also delivered papers at workshops, seminars and training programmes for Magistrates and Judges.

She has received several awards including the Lagos State Judiciary merit award in December 2003 and 2013; Distinguished Trailblazers Award twice from the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum in 2012 and 2014, National Association of Women Judges merit awards in 2010 and 2014.

She has a keen interest in Information Technology. For relaxation she loves music, travelling and reading novels.
